
Accountant
The Accountant for the Illinois State Museum Society (ISMS), a non-profit entity and friends group for the Illinois State Museum (ISM), is tasked with reestablishing a full-time accounting office to support the operations of the Society and the related activities of the ISM system. Additionally, this individual will assist with the start-up accounting processes for a retail presence and support the fundraising efforts of the advancement office through regular reconciliation and analysis. The Accountant reports to the ISM Director. This position is full- time (40 hours per week); salaried with benefits.
Key Responsibilities:
Verify, allocate, post, and reconcile accounts payable and receivable
Produce error-free accounting reports and present their results
Analyze financial information and summarize financial status
Spot errors and suggest ways to improve efficiency and spending
Provide technical support and advice to the Finance Committee, Audit Committee, and Museum Director
Review and recommend modifications to accounting systems and procedures
Participate in financial standards setting and in forecast process
Provide input into goal setting process
Prepare financial statements and produce budget according to schedule
Assist with tax audits and tax returns
Direct internal and external audits to ensure compliance
Research and document donor and board advised funds and maintain their spending policies
Serve as point of contact for investment management
Plan, assign and review work as necessary
Complete month-end and year-end close process
Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls
Ensure compliance with GAAP principles
Ensure quality customer service to colleagues, vendors, and Society board members.
Create work that is visible to the people of Illinois and nurture a team work ethic across ISM locations.
Prepare payments by verifying documentation and assisting with disbursement requests.
Staff money-handling activities at events and fundraisers.
Basic/Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in accounting from an accredited college or university
Five years' experience in general accounting, preferably in a non-profit setting
Experience with computerized ledger systems, QuickBooks and online accounts payable systems a plus
Advanced knowledge of Excel and related PC-based software
Successful experience working with non-profit boards
Strong problem solving and analytical skills
Anticipated Salary Range:
$35,000 to $55,000
