Families may enjoy learning about the night sky from Spoon River College’s Rushville Center Director Rob Kirkham. His presentation will begin at 10:15 p.m. in the Museum’s auditorium. Afterwards, with Rob’s guidance and personal equipment, participants will then be able to view the night sky from one of two of the Museum’s decks or the grounds.
In addition, Jesse Hoover, an acting member of the Peoria Astronomical Society, will share information on meteor showers, meteorites, and other objects in the night sky and have a telescope to enhance viewing opportunities. The PAS is a non-profit organization of amateur astronomers from Peoria, Illinois and the surrounding community.
Doors will open at 10:00 p.m. on Friday, August 14th and close at 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 15th. The public is welcome to come and go anytime during these hours. The astronomy presentation will begin in the auditorium promptly at 10:15 p.m. Participants may also enjoy hands-on activities and crafts to take home.
Participants should dress appropriately for the outdoors and bring a lawn/camping chair or blanket and small flash light. Light refreshments will be available. This event is co-sponsored by Dickson Mounds Museum and the Astoria Public Library.
For those who would like more of an outdoor experience, Black Sheep Flower Farm is offering tent camping for $20 per family/tent as part of this event. From 6:00-10:00 p.m. visitors are welcome to pitch their tents and enjoy the camp fire. Campers are encouraged to bring their own hot dogs, marshmallows, and all of their wiener roast favorites. They should also supply their own cup for complimentary hot chocolate. The Flower Farm is located across the road from the Museum.
