Paul Mickey Science Series presented by Robert E. Church
This presentation will highlight the role of land surveying in the development of the United States. In addition to a long career in surveying and engineering, Mr. Church has always had an interest in the history of land surveying. In his presentation, Church will explain how Thomas Jefferson’s Rectangular System of surveying brought about the development of a new nation 66 feet at a time. Church will also address Illinois history, including how Chicago almost ended up in Wisconsin and how land surveying began Abraham Lincoln’s political career.
Each month, the Paul Mickey Science Series features a different speaker and topic in the Auditorium at the Illinois State Museum. For additional information, please contact events@illinoisstatemuseum.org or (217) 558-6696.
