Blues Master King Neptune (Chris Buchanan) will bring classic Piedmont style Blues to the Hickory Ridge Concert Series in the Dickson Mounds Museum auditorium outside of Lewistown, IL. Performing on guitar and voice, he’ll be playing the music from the golden age of acoustic blues- folks like Blind Blake, Memphis Minnie, Bessie Smith with a bit of early Jazz thrown in for fun.
A highly accomplished finger style guitarist, King Neptune’s music has been described has been described Piedmont Blues with a twist. He focuses on music from the roaring 20s. “It was a carefree and fun time, the 20’s had it all.” said Buchannon. “I was studying classical music at Settlement Music School in Philadelphia until I heard Blind Blake. The music was so free compared to the rigidity of the classical repertoire that I had to learn it.” That meant hours next to a record player practicing and writing out the notes. “I couldn’t find any guitar music so I used my classical training to figure out the notes. But I had to really listen and just play along to get the feel.” King Neptune, who released his first solo recording in 2015, said he just refused to let those songs die.
