John Martin, Director of the University of Illinois Springfield Barber Astronomical Observatory will talk about his sabbatical work and the observatory’s on-going survey of luminous stars in two nearby galaxies which will soon publish its first four years of data.  He will explain how data from survey images taken of galaxies M31 and M33 by the UIS 20-inch telescope in Central Illinois are improving our understanding of massive stars, supernova, supernovae impostors, and the manufacture of heavy atoms in the universe.

Each month, the Paul Mickey Science Series features a different speaker and topic in the Auditorium at the Illinois State Museum. For additional information, please contact events@illinoisstatemuseum.org or (217) 558-6696.
