Stephen Hawking is arguably the most important and influential theoretical astrophysicist of the last 50 years, even achieving a cult status that nearly rivals Albert Einstein. He overcame enormous physical limitations , ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease, to provide new insights into the nature and evolution of black holes, the most mysterious and thought-provoking objects in the universe.
This lecture will provide a biographical sketch of Hawking, then move to a discussion of of the origin of black holes. The main thrust of the presentation will be an analysis of the physics of black holes that led to Hawking's most profound theoretical discovery, the eponymous radiation that originates from them and eventually leads to their demise. Concluding the lecture will be an account of the speaker's personal interactions with one of the 20th Century's most brilliant scientific minds.
