Tales from the Vault: Robert P. Taylor- The Museum Man with the Delicate Touch

Robert P. Taylor Join us this month as ISM operations manager Doris Bailey dives into the life and work of two former Illinois State Museum employees, Robert P. Taylor and Arthur Sieving, whose lives intersected in fascinating ways. Robert Preston Taylor started his career with the ISM in 1911 as an exhibit preparator and custodian. Arthur Sieving was an internationally known sculptor, musician, and ventriloquist who created dioramas for Museum exhibits. The two men came together in their work at the Museum and in the creation of a beautiful piece of art.

"Tales from the Vault" is a collaborative program hosted by the Illinois State Museum and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum that allows the public to discover some of the treasures from these institutions' collections."

Doris started with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources- Historic Division in 2018 and joined the Illinois State Museum in 2021.  She received her bachelor’s degree in Sociology/Anthropology from the University of Illinois at Springfield, with a minor in African American Studies in 2017 and her Master’s degree in Public History in 2021, writing her thesis on the Springfield Race Riot of 1908. Before working with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources she was the Museum Coordinator for the Springfield and Central Illinois African American History Museum; before being hired as Coordinator she was a volunteer and board member of the museum.
