At Illinois State Museum-Dickson Mounds, we are honored to be able to help preserve and share the stories and histories of Indigenous Peoples of this landscape—past and present.  As we continue to build relationships with Tribal Partners to tell these stories and histories, we are excited to share our new projects and goals throughout the month.  Our first project is the opening of a new exhibit, I Am Not A Costume. This exhibit tells the story of Ayasha, a young Indigenous girl who goes to school and finds people dressed in fake regalia for a costume party. Upset by the misrepresentation, Ayasha creates a plan with her family to share the importance of Indigenous regalia and culture and why her Indigenous heritage is not a costume.

The exhibition opening will be November 14, 2026, from 1-3pm at Illinois State Museum Dickson Mounds, 10956 N Dickson Mounds Rd., Lewistown, IL 61542.  See you there!
