Welcome to ISM-Springfield

What's Happening at the ISM-Springfield...

Illinois State Museum will reopen to the public on November 4, 2024.  Work is ongoing so some areas of the ISM will remain closed including the Play Museum on the lower level. We anticipate the project will be completed at the end of March, 2025. Check back here for updates.

The following exhibits will be open:

  • The entire first floor including the natural history exhibit Changes and the Wildlife All Around Us exhibit
  • On the second floor open exhibits include Kidz! Toys, Clothes, and Art; A Living Room:  Artists Rearrange the Furniture; and At Home in the Heartland

Restrooms will be located outside of the building in a heated/air conditioned trailer until the construction project is complete.

Changes: Dynamic Illinois Environments

The Changes exhibit allows visitors to travel into the past to see how Illinois has changed and how it continues to change today.

A Living Room: Artists Rearrange the Furniture

The artists in this exhibition find inspiration in furniture, taking known forms and creating something wholly new. Some become strange creatures while others are menacing and fragile.

Kidz! Toys, clothes, and art

This exhibit celebrates all things “kidz” from the collection of the Illinois State Museum.  Visitors will see children’s clothing, toys, and objects from the 1840s-1990s, as well as artwork featuring children.

Wildlife Around Us

The Illinois State Museum’s new exhibition Wildlife Around Us, showcases the features and behaviors that help many native species live alongside humans.

At Home in the Heartland

Listen to the stories of real people who lived in Illinois. Immerse yourself in the dramatic changes in household life over the past 300 years.
