The 1908 Race Riot had a devastating impact on the lives of African Americans in Springfield and across the nation. Three African Americans lost their lives, countless others suffered physical and emotional trauma at the hands of White rioters, and nearly 80 homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed. In the years that followed, many accounts of the violence were silenced and overlooked.
As we examine the aftermath of the riot, we can also reflect on the importance of confronting historical truth and how doing so can help shape a more just future.
