Honrando a Nuestros Ancestros: The Bridge Between the Living and the Dead

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is one of the most recognizable Latinx holidays. To help celebrate, the Illinois State Museum collaborated with our community partners: the Hispanic Women of Springfield, and the Diversity Center at the University of Illinois Springfield.

This holiday and exhibit are celebrations of life. Each community group and the Museum created Ofrendas, or altars, to honor and remember the lives of those who have passed away. This exhibit’s title Honrando a Nuestros Ancestros, translates to Honoring Our Ancestors in English. This exhibit focuses on the celebration of those who came before us, and how they helped shape who we are today.

This exhibition is an opportunity to showcase this important Latinx holiday, and celebrate with our Latinx community members. It also serves as an opportunity to learn more about the Hispanic and Latinx populations of Illinois. According to 2022 census data, approximately 2.3 million individuals in Illinois identify as Hispanic, and over 1.7 million people in Illinois are Spanish speakers. You or your neighbors, friends, and other members of your community might be Hispanic or Latinx, and this population’s history is not often explored in Midwestern schools or museums.

El Día de los Muertos, o Day of the Dead, es una de las festividades latinas más reconocibles.
