Illinois State Museum’s Curator of Anthropology Dr. Brooke Morgan will present First Peoples of the Central Illinois River Valley: Colonizing an Ice Age Landscape as this month’s Illinois Archaeology lecture, on Sunday, December 17th at 2:00 p.m.

How long ago did people first live in what is now the Central Illinois River Valley? What was life like 12,000 years ago in this region? What do you do when no one has been there before? Dr. Morgan will explore these questions and more during a lecture on Late Pleistocene geology and archaeology of the Illinois River Valley. The lecture will review our current understanding of the last Ice Age in this region, and how interdisciplinary study of earth sciences, human behavioral ecology, and ethnography—as well as crowd-sourced scientific data—contribute to archaeological interpretation of initial landscape colonization.

The lecture begins promptly at 2:00 p.m. followed by light refreshments and an opportunity to meet with the speaker and museum staff.  Admission is free; however, donations are appreciated.  Registration is not required.
