Dickson Mounds is a prominent archaeological museum within the Illinois State Museum System, offering visitors not only a chance to explore its rich history but also access to scenic walking trails. These trails provide a chance to experience the natural beauty of Illinois prairies and forests.

Join State Museum naturalists and educators on a guided walk and learn about native wildlife and how people live alongside them. Walks will last about 40 minutes, with opportunities for three sessions. Visitors will also learn the basics of nature journaling and have the chance to practice documenting their observations.

This event is part of the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read Program, hosted by the Illinois State Museum System. The featured book for this program is Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law by Mary Roach, which explores themes of human-wildlife conflict, cooperation, and cohabitation. Participants can look forward to an engaging nature walk, a creative writing activity, and insightful discussions on the themes presented in “Fuzz.” As a special bonus, all attendees will receive a copy of the book as part of the event.

We thank the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and Arts Midwest for their support of this program. The NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.
