Taste of ISM: Scott Joplin’s Lost Rag Time Opera Score

ISM-Springfield, Research & Collections Center
Taste of ISM Taste of ISM celebrates the work and passion of the team of the Illinois State Museum. You’re invited to join us for a lunch and learn style program where you’ll hear stories about art, history, science, and the magical world of museums. You are welcome to bring your lunch to eat during the program, but lunch is not provided. On October 16, 1901, President Theodore Roosevelt invited the president of the Tuskegee Institute, Booker T. Washington to the White House for a formal dinner. This outraged many White Americans, as they took it as an affront to democracy. Their racist and hypocritical behavior inspired the King of Ragtime Scott Joplin to write his first ragtime opera; titled A Guest of Honor. This amazing piece of work was unfortunately lost right here in Springfield in 1903. Join the Illinois State Museum as we learn how such an important piece of American history was lost and never found.
