From Collection to Curation: The National Building Arts Center

ISM-Springfield
decorative terra cotta panels The National Building Arts Center (NBAC) promotes public awareness of the importance of architecture, manufacturing, construction, and urban design in our built environment. Larry Giles, an “urban archaeologist” who spent over four decades salvaging and preserving significant parts of condemned buildings, assembled the NBAC’s collections of architectural artifacts. The NBAC houses the largest and most diverse collection of building artifacts in the US, located in the former Sterling Steel Foundry in Sauget, Illinois. The museum’s first exhibition Urban Archaeology: Lost Buildings of St. Louis, is on view at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation in St. Louis from September 8, 2023, through February 4, 2024. Join NBAC board president Mike Jackson on Wednesday, October 4 at 12 p.m. at the Illinois State Museum headquarters auditorium to learn more about the impact of the National Building Arts Center on architecture and design.
